Safe and reliable truck parking remains one of the most persistent operational challenges in the trucking industry. A recent poll reported by Truckers News shows that most drivers do not regularly rely on highway on- and off-ramps for parking at the end of their shifts, despite ongoing shortages in designated truck parking spaces.

The findings come alongside a broader study conducted by Altitude, Geotab, and HNTB, which analyzed more than 2.2 million parking events on U.S. highway ramps each year, including over 300,000 long-duration stops at those locations. While the data confirms that ramp parking does occur, driver feedback suggests it is typically used as a last resort rather than a routine solution.

Approximately one-third of drivers reported that they never park on highway ramps. Only a small percentage indicated that they use ramps regularly, and an even smaller group reported doing so daily. Overall, the trend points to a consistent preference among drivers to avoid ramp parking whenever safer alternatives are available.

Certain regions see higher levels of ramp parking activity

The study identified several states where on- and off-ramp parking occurs more frequently than in other parts of the country. States such as Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, California, and Pennsylvania reported the highest levels of ramp parking activity, particularly near major freight corridors and metropolitan areas with limited truck parking capacity.

The data also revealed patterns in timing. Unauthorized or emergency parking on ramps was most likely to occur during midweek periods, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, when freight volumes remain high and available parking spaces become scarce.

These patterns highlight how operational demand, delivery schedules, and infrastructure limitations intersect to influence driver decisions.

Parking shortages create safety and productivity risks

Illegal or emergency parking on highway ramps is widely recognized as a safety concern. Limited access to secure parking forces drivers to make difficult decisions when they reach their hours-of-service limits without a safe place to stop.

This situation increases the risk of roadside incidents, vehicle damage, and traffic disruptions. It also creates operational inefficiencies across the supply chain. Drivers may spend significant time searching for available parking, reducing productivity and increasing stress levels.

For carriers and shippers, these delays can affect delivery reliability, route planning, and overall transportation costs.

Infrastructure investment remains critical for long-term solutions

Industry stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for expanded truck parking infrastructure across key freight corridors. Investments in rest areas, dedicated truck parking facilities, and real-time parking visibility systems are increasingly viewed as essential components of a modern transportation network.

Technology is beginning to play a role in addressing the issue, with some states and private operators deploying tools that provide drivers with real-time information about available parking capacity. However, technology alone cannot replace physical infrastructure.

The long-term solution will likely require coordinated efforts between federal agencies, state transportation departments, and private industry partners.

What this means for trucking operations in 2026

Truck parking is no longer just a driver convenience issue, it has become an operational and safety priority. As freight volumes fluctuate and regulations continue to evolve, the availability of safe parking will remain a key factor in route planning, driver retention, and compliance with hours-of-service requirements.

For fleets, carriers, and logistics providers, addressing parking challenges is increasingly tied to broader goals: improving safety, protecting driver well-being, and maintaining consistent service performance in a competitive transportation environment.
