Good news for trailer manufacturing in the U.S. Hyundai Translead, one of the biggest names in semi-trailers, is making its new Illinois operations even bigger than first planned.

On October 22, 2026, the company said it will raise its investment in Will County, Illinois to $600 million and create 3,750 full-time jobs. Back in March, the plan was $450 million and about 2,500 jobs. According to Transport Topics, the extra 1,250 jobs come from adding a third shift at the new facilities.

Why the plans grew

The company said it decided to add the third shift to keep up with growing demand. A third shift is a clear sign of confidence. Manufacturers don’t add a full shift of workers unless they expect to keep those production lines busy.

The two Will County sites are about 50 miles southwest of Chicago. Hyundai Translead is giving new life to two empty industrial sites: a former Caterpillar heavy equipment plant and a former Lion Electric facility. Illinois state officials called the project the largest single manufacturing job commitment in recent state history.

What Hyundai Translead builds

Hyundai Translead makes many of the trailers you see every day on the highway, including dry vans, refrigerated trailers, flatbeds, truck bodies, and dollies. Until now, its main manufacturing operations have been in Tijuana, Mexico. The Illinois plants will give the company a major production base inside the U.S.

The state of Illinois is supporting the project with $104 million in tax incentives over 15 years. It is also investing in a new manufacturing training program at Joliet Junior College to help prepare local workers for these jobs.

What this means for trucking

More trailer production in the U.S. can mean shorter lead times and easier access to new equipment for fleets. Will County is also one of the busiest freight and logistics areas in the country, with major rail yards and highway connections, so building trailers there puts production close to customers.

The news also fits a bigger trend. Trailer orders have picked up this year as carriers replace aging equipment and plan for the year ahead. A manufacturer expanding its plans in the middle of that is a good sign that the industry expects steady demand.

At CW Carriers, we like seeing this kind of investment in the equipment side of trucking. Reliable trailers and healthy manufacturing help keep freight moving, and thousands of new jobs is good news for the communities around one of America’s most important freight hubs.
