Why Shipping Costs Are About to Shift
Shipping costs rarely stay still, and this year will bring one of the biggest changes the LTL sector has seen in decades. According to TruckingDive.com, a new LTL classification system is coming, and it will reshape how freight is priced. The key factor going forward will be density. Shipments that take up a lot of space but weigh very little will cost more, while denser freight will become cheaper.

What the New LTL Classification Really Means
The most important question for shippers is simple: How will this affect my costs? The upcoming update - scheduled for mid-summer - puts density at the center of pricing. That means accurate weight, dimensions, and packaging matter more than ever. Some freight classes will get more expensive, others more affordable, and a few will stay roughly the same. But overall, this is the largest shift in LTL classification the industry has rolled out.
To prepare, shippers should talk directly with their carriers to understand how the new rules work. The industry is moving to a density-based model to improve pricing accuracy and reduce waste in the supply chain. When pricing is based on true space usage, carriers can plan better - and shippers can avoid surprises.

Other Factors Still Matter - But Density Leads the Way
While density will drive the final cost, other freight characteristics still play a role. Handling, packaging, stowability, and liability remain part of the overall evaluation. Even so, density outweighs everything else in the new structure. The changes are currently open for public feedback, with final implementation set for July 19.
For shippers, accuracy will be essential. Bills of lading must include correct weight and exact dimensions. The more precise the data, the more accurate the pricing. This shift will also push the industry toward consistent density-based invoicing, helping eliminate the guesswork that often leads to reweigh fees or unexpected adjustments.

Why This Change Is Actually a Win for Shippers
Under the new model, shippers can expect fewer surprises when the final freight bill arrives. With clearer density rules, carriers won’t need to reweigh shipments as often, and invoices will more closely match initial quotes. But this requires solid preparation on the front end - proper packaging, accurate measurements, and more communication between shippers and carriers.
In simple terms, here’s what shippers need to keep in mind:

  • less-dense freight will cost more because it uses more space per pound
  • dense freight will cost less because it makes better use of trailer capacity
  • some density classes will stay the same
Moving forward, getting density right will be the difference between overspending and staying cost-efficient. The new classification system rewards accuracy, transparency, and proper preparation - and for shippers who follow those rules, pricing will become far more predictable and sustainable.
